10 Best Ever Game Dunks

By Rodimus Dunn

There’s no more electrifying play in basketball than the slam dunk, and we’re here to provide the ten best in game dunks in NBA history.  The important thing about great dunks is taking into consideration who is dunking, who is getting dunked on, and/or the context of the dunk.  For example, dunking on a legitimate shot blocker on a solid defensive team, who happens to be your chief rival, in the playoffs (say Patrick Ewing) means a lot more than dunking on Spud Webb in a regular season game.  Without further adieu… (click on the dunk name to see the youtube clip)

Honorable Mention

Tom Chambers over Mark Jackson

o   Anyone who says Chambers wasn’t athletic is an idiot.  If you look at this dunk in slow-mo, he hits the top of Jackson’s chest with his knees, and if you look at Chambers’ head, it’s literally at rim level until the very end.

Tracy McGrady over Shawn Bradley

o   Many a player has dunked over Shawn Bradley, but usually not guys as soft as T-Mac.  This was a playoff game between two bitter rivals, and McGrady flushes over Bradley (who initially was going to put his arm up, but then just braced for impact) with some authority.

10.  Kobe Bryant over Dwight Howard

o   In his own words, Mamba “baptized” Dwight Howard.  The two time defensive player of the year displays the death of the true shot blocker, and doesn’t even jump with Kobe.  He simply stands with his hands up and nearly gets Frederic Weis’ed

9.  Dominique Wilkins over the Miami Heat

o   People like to talk about the Human Highlight Reel’s dunk over Larry Bird as being his best, not even close.  If you forward the clip to 49 seconds, you’ll see him school the whole Miami team.  He hops past the first two guys, and then proceeds to dunk over the remaining three.  Don’t hurt ‘em Nique!

8.  Dr. J over Michael Cooper

o   Even though this was towards the end of Dr. J’s career, he still had quicks and hops.  He speeds down the side of the lane, cradles the ball for the final few steps and elevates over Michael Cooper (who was considered the premier perimeter defender at that time).  Cooper initially jumps with the good doctor, but at the last second Cooper realizes the error of his ways and tries to duck out of the way and not hit his head on the backboard.

7.  John Starks over the Bulls

o   The 3pt shooting Starks accelerated baseline and elevates past Horace Grant and Jordan.  Best part is he dunked with power using his left hand.

6.  Shawn Kemp over Alton Lister

o   Not only does Kemp drive through the lane, cup the ball, spread his legs, dunk with authority, and knock Lister to the floor, he points at him lying on the ground for good measure.

5.  Scottie Pippen over Patrick Ewing

o   The usually mild mannered Pippen dunks ferociously on Patrick Ewing, knocks him to the floor, and then stands over the fallen seven footer to talk junk.  It’s pure poetry.

4.  Dwyane Wade over Anderson Varejao

o   Knowing the full context of this dunk makes it even better.  Lebron tries to dunk over Jermaine O’Neal and misses, and then Wade goes coast-to-coast and dunks savagely over Varejao who falls backward into the basket support head first.  The most awesome thing is that Varejao is known for flopping and taking charges.  The one time he decides to try to block a dunk he gets posterized.  After the dunk Wade steps over Varejao and yells, “That’s how you do it!” in case Lebron wasn’t watching.

3.  Baron Davis over Andrei Kirilenko

o   B-diddy, a POINT GUARD remember, bangs bodies with AK-47 in midair and still crushes the dunk despite Kirilenko’s hand being several inches above the rim.  You know you’ve seen a great dunk based upon the reaction of the spectators.  Stephen Jackson is wiping down Davis, Pietrus looks like he just saw Bigfoot, and Foyle looks like he just smelled some rotten eggs.  Just nasty!

2.  Jordan over Patrick Ewing

o   Not only does his Airness somehow beat a double team in the corner of the court, he goes chest to chest with a legitimate seven foot, shot blocking center.  Jordan then stares Ewing down as he runs back up the court.

1.  Vince Carter over Frederic Weis

o   Umm, he just dunked literally over a 7’3” human being!  87 inches, 221 centimeters.  Vince officially dunked Weis out of the league.  How can anyone respect a guy who that happened to?!  This is unquestionably the best dunk ever performed in a game.
